Moonjelly is a mod released on October 2023 made by ADM and Notka. It adds the creature of the same name and its loot: Moonjelly Jelly into the world.

The Moonjellies are passive, flying mobs, initially found in the deep and dark waters of the Hazardous Ocean. They wander around their spawn location by drifting at each pulse of their bell by intermittence. They adorn a silly smile akin to other species of Jellyfish in Shipwrecked but they are much larger in size.

When a Full Moon occur, Moonjellies will respawn by descending from far above until there are 15 in the world (configurable in world settings), but this time they will be located anywhere in the sea, although preferably multiple screens away from any shore. Because of this Moonjellies can never go extinct but remain relatively rare due to the immensity of the ocean.

On death, they will drop from 1 to 2 Moonjelly Jelly (50% for second). Moonjellies can also be fed with Glommer's Goop, the goop will first accumulate under their bell but the second time they will process it into 1 unit of jelly dropped on the floor.

Despite that Moonjellies are innocent creature and will increase Naughtiness by 4 when killed, they are capable of attacking unintentionally if a mob or player rams into them over a certain speed, causing a shock in a small radius. This can also happen if a boat is moving too fast or when they refine Glommer's Goop.

The shock only deals 3 damage but also "Jellifies" and increase sleepiness for a few seconds, causing some slowdown so it's best to be careful while sailing to avoid snowballing situations. Lunar aligned entities are immune to their nematocysts in contact and shocks.

A gooey substance dropped by Moonjellies. The Moonjelly Jelly main purpose is to Jellify about anything (items, structures, plants, mobs, players, etc...) at the exception of shadow related things.

When something becomes jellified, it is made visible, glows, and allows interactions even in complete darkness. However, this doesn't emit any light directly, and thus doesn't protect from Charlie apparences but she will fail to deal any health of sanity damage if the player face or head is jellified, only removing the layer of jelly in the process. Nightmare Fuel can also be used to "Unjellify" things.

The application of Moonjelly Jelly is "smart", and can be done globally or on certain parts based of the order and spread of things. A few examples :

  • Jellyfing a Mini Sign can result in either only the drawing or the sign, or both to glow. This is if you apply it before or after drawing, or if you use a jellified Feather Pencil or not.
  • Putting jellified Petals into a End Table will result in only the flowers to be jellied. But it's possible to jellify only the table, or both too.
    • Same mechanisms can occur for Crock Pots, Birdcages, Produce Scales, Fish Scale-O-Matics, and many others...
  • Picking up jelly will make the player's hands jellified.
    • This has no effect against Charlie unlike a jellified face from eating jellified items or getting attacked by a Moonjelly.

Interactions between objects will also cause the jelly to spread to other objects. More examples :

  • Crafting or cooking something from jellified items.
  • Exchanging items between multiple stacks.
  • Repairing a wall, boat, or refueling, sewing items will spread it too.
  • Ressources, drops, spawns of something jellified will make them jellified too.
  • Etc...

Because of this, a single application of Moonjelly Jelly can be a one time thing (ex: on already made equipments, for fashion) or have infinite more steps to it (ex: on crafting materials, if the stack is never depleted).

Moonjelly Jelly can also be used as a Glow Berry substitue when doing a Glow Berry Mousse or as fuel for Moggles.

Prototype.png Tips

  • With the help of a Telelocator Staff + Focus, Moonjellies can be relocated on land anywhere desired and will remain around this point.
  • Moonjelly Jelly has 0.5 Monster value when used in the Crock Pot, but it's neither meat, veggies, or anything. But it is usually cheaper to use jellified Ice, Twigs, or better: a whole Mini-Glacier or Sapling for permanent jellified supplies.
  • Only 10 Moonjellies will initially spawn in Hazardous Ocean areas during world generation, so after the next Full Moon, at least 5 more will be able to spawn a bit anywhere in the ocean, allowing for potential more random encounters quickly.

Filler.png Trivia

  • The Moonjelly mod and mob were made after the 2023 Mob Vote Together hosted on the Klei Forums. A parody of Minecraft Mob Votes:
    • Of all 133 participators, Moonjelly was leading with 50.76% of votes, against the Hatebird (24.24%) and the Blueprint Golem (25%).
  • Moonjellies will keep different face expression for a while based of the situations, when attacked, seeing another Moonjelly being attacked, shocking targets, or refining goop.
  • As well as different color nuances: going from light blue to purple, passing by light green.
  • They also glow in the dark (as they are themselves jellified) but only their insides is visible.
