Scarenival is a mod released on October 2021 made by ADM and Notka. It adds a new in-game "seasonal" event designed for the Hallowed Nights period of time, due to its spooky content but it can be fully played anytime.

In order to get things started, players would first have to encounter Corvus Badfeather near the Florid Postern. He has a single trade at first for a Scariercrow Kit: a large structure to deploy to start building the Scarenival. This process, and the general idea behind the event is a "horror" version of the Midsummer Cawnival with completely different games, said to be "experiments" and the player will take the role of (Corvus' favorite) test subject and be paid with tickets to trade for various decor and inventions.

Scariercrow

And they want me to make it scarier? Brr...

–Woodie, when examining a default Scariercrow

The centerpiece of the Scarenival. Once the Scariercrow is purchased and placed, Corvus Badfeather stocks will expand so that players can purchase new experiments and machines to play with, as well as a variety of tokens :

The Scariercrow is a very large scarecrow set by a dead tree on a park.

It has a very basic apparence at first but players can decorate it with various costume pieces found in boxes inside of the Scarenival or occasionally by digging Graves / Mounds. There are 5 different costumes which can be mixed and matched :

Peekaspook

I'm not the one who owe an apology for once.

–Maxwell, when examining a Peekaspook

Small graves (Eggstones) will appear overtime around the Scariercrow. These are home of tiny ghost birds called Peekaspooks. The amount of Eggstones to spawn is determined by the decoration level of the Scariercrow, going from 1 to 6.

The Eggstones have various aspects, and random moss coverage, but also a multitude of special epitaphs. Some are jokes, but others describe wishes from their respective Peekaspook (with a sad face in this case) for a specific Hallowed Night candy that can be given to them. Peekaspooks will grant Prize Tickets when their wish is granted, and when they watch players complete minigames before vanishing.

Games

In order to play the various games of the Scarenival, tokens must be given to their respective machines or to a Coinpecker, these emerge from the floor on empty minigame stages if the player has any token in the inventory. For the Kraken Pool minigame, a Coinplunderer will show up instead in water near shore or boats.

Some of the minigames look dangerous but they are completely safe, although sanity may be lowered by the end a bit.

Spark Park

Stage Description
Spark Park.png The Spark Park is a large, circular stage paved with stones and a metallic surface in the middle. When started with the help of a Coinpecker, large hedges will appear in a cloud of bats, preventing players from leaving, and a Bizarre Rod will emerge in the center.

The middle platform will become inaccessible and leaving the stage from teleporting or such is forbidden (this ends the minigame without tickets) For the next 30 seconds, the stones around the stage will start to highlight and flick, faster and faster, this indicates a Lightning will very soon strike this stone and should be avoided. Lightnings will occur on more and more stones as time goes, and the stones under players will frequently be targeted too. Every few seconds, Frogs and Moslings drawn on pieces of cardboard will emerge, running into them will knock player on the floor for over a second.

The Spark Park minigame gives 30 Prize Tickets at best, but 3 tickets are lost for each lightning and cardboard monster hit.

When a Golden Token is used, the max ticket count is tripled but both lightnings and cardboard monsters are increased.

Hedge Maze

Stage Description
Hedge Maze.png The Hedge Maze is a 3x3 tile centered stage with a Beacon inhabited by a small crow that accepts tokens to play the minigame.

When started, bat clouds will rise layouts of hedges of a singular size from short to tall. The beacon will be teleported somewhere in the maze layout and the pumpkin of it will start to emit light. Players are also teleported in some defined areas of the layout.

The goal is to reach the beacon and activate it to repeat the maze reconstruction over, and over. Each completion grant +5 tickets and +5 seconds to the initial 30 seconds timer.

It's a good idea to rotate the camera around to have a better view of the maze especially while the hedges are tall.

When a Golden Token is used, Hedges are guaranteed to be tall and only +3 seconds is added per completion, but ticket score is doubled.

Spider Dinner

Stage Description
Spider Dinner.png The Spider Dinner stage is a large, web / snowflake shaped carpet with a table in its center. A Coinpecker will come out to take tokens in order to play it.

When started, a random unpickable Spooky Oil recipe will be placed on the table at full stacksize (x40), the remaining stacksize is the amount of tickets that will be obtained at the end of the 30 seconds minigame timer.

Shortly after, the "Spider Troup" will spawn: a group of always the same 13 distinguishable spiders of certain colors that wear accessories. Each spider will become hungry every few seconds at random.

When a spider hungers, emoting FXs will play over them and they will aim for the food on the table to eat an unit of it. In order to score as many tickets as possible, players must defend the food by attacking the Troup which cause them to go away for a bit. Bringing certain weapons can prove to be more effective than others.

When a Golden Token is used, the spiders will hunger more often, and gain a 20% extra move speed. The remaining food stacksize will be worth twice as many tickets.

Kraken Pool

Stage Description
Kraken Pool.png The Kraken Pool stage is placed over water, with a floating buoy (which can be hammered to destroy the stage if needed), and what looks like a sea monsters under the surface. This can be placed both in pools or in plain ocean, and played from either the shore or on a boat.

To start the game, a Coinplunderer will emerge to take the tokens.

When started, nearby players will be offered a Fishing Rod-bot for 1 minute, during this time, special fishes will spawn within the Kraken Pool. Standard Ocean Fishing Rod can be used, but the fishes in the pool are more interested into the special lures attached to the Rod-bots.

Tentackles will also emerge out of the pool every few seconds. These mechanical tentacles deal no damage but a lot of knockback which may abruptly interrupt fishing and lock away some spots. Tentackles only have 1 HP and loot from 1 to 5 tickets so dealing with them is a good idea.

The fishes in the Kraken Pool are either Glass Catfish or Fishy Anglers but the latest only spawn when Golden Tokens are used. Both are filled with various items: Many tickets, but also Standard, Golden, or Plush Tokens.

When a Golden Token is used, Fishy Anglers can now spawn. They are slightly harder to catch and may loot a Scariercrow Pieces for the Pirate costume which is the only way to access it.

Claw Machine

Stage Description
Claw Machine.png The Claw Machine is a circular metallic platform with a long mechanical, Shadow Hand descending from above.

To play it, players must give a Plush Coin to the hand.

When started, a random array of plushies will spawn in the now restricted platform. 4 Smashable Buttons will also spawn on each side: One with a grab action to it, that cause the hand to fetch or release under it. And the 3 others with direction arrows that cause the hand to go there. Once the hand reach out of the platform, it will stop a moment, allowing for a bit of time to release any carried plush if the grab button is pressed, and return to the middle.

Multiple directions can be pressed so that the hand returns diagonally and cover the whole platform.

The buttons are fragile and will break if hit too hard, so it's best to play the Claw Machine with nothing in hands or a Walking Cane at best to reach buttons faster. The buttons will swap of direction and action every few seconds, but there will always be one grab action available somewhere around.

Golden Tokens cannot be given to the Claw Machine.

There is a total of 36 unique Plushies to find in the Claw Machine, or 40 if hidden plush states are included :

Filler.png Trivia

  • The Scarenival mod and idea were made at the occasion of a modding challenge hosted on the Klei Entertainment Discord server for Halloween, where mod authors and teams could submit one mod and players would cast a vote. Scarenival ended up at the 5th position (57 votes) and the team received the top chart prizes.
    • Klei did not host any other modding challenge since, but Scarenival still got more content the following years around October, with new games, machines, prizes and plushies.

  • It's unclear if Corvus Badfeather and Corvus Goodfeather are the same person or any related.
    • Both can be seen together when the two carnivals are enabled but considering there can also be multiples of a same survivors, we will never really know.

  • The name of the event is mostly referenced as "spooknival" in the mod code.
